A recent poll conducted has revealed staggering statistics that the average age British children first become drunk is just 12. The majority of the underage drinkers first experience being drunk abroad and most are accompanied by their parents.
The holiday website Sunshine recently carried out some research to discover the first time that young people have experienced being drunk. The poll asked 2,113 young adults aged between 18-21 living in all parts of the UK, a series of questions to gain the worrying data. The anonymous survey, in order to gain more truthful answers, was given to an even number of men and women to give the fairest possible results.
The first question on the poll asked the participants ‘How old were you when you first became intoxicated (tipsy or drunk) after drinking alcohol?’ It is here that we see the stunning results that the average age of young Britons who first became intoxicated were just 12 years of age, particularly worrying when you consider that this is just an average. Just 2% of those polled said that they had never drank alcohol.
Those that first became intoxicated prior to the age of 16 were asked if their parents had been with them during this time to which 59% said ‘yes’. Speaking about these results in particular, Sunshine Managing Director Chris Clarkson had this to say:
“It’s one thing letting a youngster have a sip of your champagne on New Year’s Eve, but it’s another matter entirely allowing them to end up drunk; not to mention dangerous!”
Whilst drinking with parents seems far more responsible than alone or just with friends, we are sure that many of you echo these sentiments based on these surprising results. The survey went on to ask where was the most popular place that the underage drinkers had first become drunk and here were the top 5 responses:
- On holiday abroad – 66%
- At home – 11%
- At a friend’s house – 10%
- In a park – 7%
- At a wedding/special occasion – 3%
It seems unsurprising that holidays abroad are the most popular time for those underage to be drunk for the first time as a result of a more relaxed approach to alcohol, thoughts that Chris Clarkson agrees with.
“It’s fair to say that alcohol is more freely available to young people when they’re on holiday abroad, because other countries can be more lenient with their alcohol laws and policies. It’s rare for teenagers to be asked for ID in holiday resorts.”
The survey finally asked what the most popular style of drink was that the youngsters first drank when they became intoxicated, the top 3 responses were as follows:
1- Alcopops – 31%
2- Cider – 25%
3- Wine/Champagne – 22%
These are somewhat less surprising results than the others as sweeter drinks are generally more enjoyed by youth and often the marketing campaigns by alcopops and cider companies are aimed towards younger drinkers. It’s fair to say that this survey has brought about some interesting and, at times, worrying statistics, let’s hope that they are not a reflection on the whole of the nation.
