So, today, we’re beginning our effort to move the conversation forward on solo female travel. Why, you may ask?
Well, check out this story from the Sacramento Union, July 1916, headlined GIRL ALONE TO CROSS CONTINENT. That story seems hilariously outdated now, but mainstream press is still talking about female solo travel as a trend or blaring stories about the dangers – albeit related more to international travel than U.S. road trips. There are a lot of great woman-specific resources from Go Girl Guides to numerous blogs. We felt that as a mainstream app and site, we could better serve our users by just including information like this alongside the weather and best hotels. And let’s face it. When we are still saying the same tired, mansplainy things after more than 100 years, it’s time to look for new ideas.
Here are two new features: A Solo Female Travelers Tribe and Solo Female Travel Tips.
Solo Female Travelers Tribe
Join for woman-to-woman tips and clear information to help you decide on your next adventure – and tag destinations and spots you’d recommend to other solo female travelers.
Solo Female Travel Tips
Available for 44 countries and counting, with ratings on perception of safety and specific tips from our community directly on topic pages. Check out Morocco or Peru. By placing this information alongside things like weather and destination descriptions, we hope to make it easier for women to find what they need – without going to the ‘women’s section’ or a special app — AND raise awareness that traveling while female isn’t (yet) without complications.
We are also commissioning and sharing more in depth stories for each country like this one….and if you need some general tips to get you started, Tripster Pro and digital nomad Linda Talarico has got you covered.
