Did you know that Greece has over 6,000 islands and islets scattered in the Aegean and Ionian Seas, of which 227 islands are inhabited? I’ve visited just a handful of them, including Skiathos, Kos, Corfu, Monemvasia, Zakynthos, Ios, and Santorini. But of all the islands, Mykonos has to be my favourite. Those white washed buildings blue doors, pretty windmills and beautiful beaches make me fall in love that little bit more every time.
The newly renovated Myconian Ambassador Hotel certainly qualifies, as its unforgettable views over the Aegean, chic infinity pool, world class thalassotherapy spa, and top tier restaurant give you plenty of opportunities to make your trip an incredible one.
However, what you do at your destination is also important. Here are my top five things to do in Mykonos, as I think you’ll like them as much as I do!
1) Explore Mykonos Town
Start your time in Mykonos by exploring its streets. With virtually all the buildings in Mykonos Town being painted a brilliant white, your walk along its cobblestoned pathways will be filled with all sorts of stops for photo opportunities.
The best photo opportunity in Mykonos town involves its famed windmills. While there are several scattered across the island, the Kato Mili grouping is the most photogenic of the bunch.
This series of seven windmills sits on a hill facing north towards the Aegean, positioned in order to take advantage of onshore winds.
While they do not function in their intended matter anymore, they make for a postcard shot that every visitor to Mykonos seeks to capture.
2) Sunset drinks in Little Venice
After a long day spent wandering around Mykonos Town, head over to Little Venice for a sunset drink. This is easily one of the most romantic spots on the island, even if you are sharing the moment with lots of other visitors.
With plenty of restaurants and bars lining the waterfront, it will be easy to find a place to watch the sun sink into the horizon. Plenty of art galleries can be found here as well, which will give you something to do afterward.
3) Enjoy the Party at Super Paradise Beach
If you’re looking for a vibrant social scene day or night in Mykonos, you will want to spend some time at Super Paradise Beach. While it may not be for the claustrophobic, if you are looking to meet people on holiday, this is the place to do it.
The party only gets louder as the afternoon wears on, and once the sun sets, things really go off, continuing until the sun rises the next morning. Gay friendly and open to people of all backgrounds, it is the perfect place in Mykonos to let your hair down.
4) Visit one of the island’s many beaches
If you are looking for a quieter spot on Mykonos, Agrari Beach is a great place to go. With a couple of properties located here, there are still enough tourist services around to keep you well supplied, but the majority of the parties happen elsewhere on Mykonos.
Besides the aforementioned Super Paradise Beach, there are other spots on Mykonos that have a scorching party scene. Paraga Beach is popular with backpackers, while Paradise Beach (not to be confused with Super Paradise Beach) is home to the infamous Tropicana Beach Bar.
Looking to get away from it all? Hire a taxi to take you to Agios Sostis Beach. Located on the north shore of Mykonos, this short but blissful beach only has a local tavern, which sits atop the cliff above. Have lunch there, then laze away the rest of the afternoon in peace.
5) Have a traditional Greek dinner in Mykonos Town
While it may be convenient to dine at your hotel restaurant throughout much of your stay, be sure to have a traditional Greek dinner at least once in Mykonos Town.
A highly recommended spot on TipAdvisor is the Funky Kitchen. Don’t let its name and modern decor fool you: the restaurant’s take on many traditional Greek dishes have won praise from countless customers. I also love Nikos Tavern with its red and white checked tablecloths and delicious souvlaki – it’s a restaurant I’ve been back to on every trip to Mykonos. For a romantic setting you may also want to try Avra, which bosts a beautiful little courtyard garden decorated with colourful bougainvillea, cacti, candles, low lighting and crisp linen.
Situated just steps from the fine sand of Platis Gialos, Myconian Ambassador hotel is based in a tranquil location, meaning you can relax and unwind but still have the option to enjoy a taste of the island’s party scene. Nearby you have Psarou, with its beau monde and superyachts at anchor, or Paranga, which is home to authentic little tavernas frequented by the locals. The hotel’s private launch can take you to the mysterious ruins of ancient Delos, or you can take a taxi or car into Mykonos town (Chora) with its whitewashed maze of boutiques and bars.
The hotel itself blends high design and cool sophistication with tones and textures borrowed from the local region. A highlight is the spectacular pool deck, Stay, which beats to different rhythms throughout the day. You can enjoy a leisurely breakfast at Latitudes, light meals and drinks from George’s bar, or dine in the candle-lit glow of Efisia, one of the island’s best restaurants.
