Starting in mid-July, Crystal River Cruises is shifting from e-bikes to regular Trek bikes because too many guests were getting injured with the e-bikes.
Walter Littlejohn, vice president of river cruises, said Crystal’s experience has been that many guests have not been on a bike for more than a decade, and don’t handle the e-bikes successfully.
E-bikes use battery packs to power cycles on hills and in other circumstances that make them easier for guests to pedal but harder to control.
Crystal delivers the bikes to its four Rhine-class ships, rather than store them onboard. The larger Crystal Mozart has carried bikes onboard, but Crystal will now deliver bikes to the Mozart at ports of call until its departure from the Crystal fleet in December.
