The property, completed two years ago, features many sustainable processes and equipment including dual flush systems and LED lighting throughout. Foot pedals are installed in every sink of the resort’s five kitchens. And individual metering systems in many of the buildings and kitchens are utilized to identify areas in which water consumption can be reduced. In addition, a rainwater capture system is used to supplement daily usage needs of the property.
To reduce its impact on the surrounding environment, an onsite biodegradable chemicals production plant has been installed that generates detergent and chlorine using water, salt and electricity. Furthermore, to improve the resort’s sustainable performance energy and water consumption and waste are regularly monitored.
A formalized environmental plan developed by the resort is supported and directed from the corporate level to various departments. Departmental Heads take on key positions in ensuring compliance levels are met. While the Environmental Officer and Sustainable Tourism Officer are responsible for completion of documentation work regarding sustainability practices. An official Green Team also conducts weekly meetings to share ideas regarding resource management strategies and organize local community events.
In line with its environmental responsibilities, a clean-up of the Maimón River and Nisibón Lagoon located in the province of La Altagracia was organized by the CHIC Punta Cana team. Members of the Executive Committee led by example and joined staff members from different departments in the incentive. By working together, managers proved that goals can be achieved with active teamwork.
Other communication strategies utilized to reinforce sustainability practices include the use of visual aids and continued staff training. While every employee is issued with a Green reminder card focusing on Green Globe standards.
