Although our visit to Ukraine didn’t start well, we still believe that Ukraine is a great country that is well worth a visit.
Odessa
Odessa is a beautiful city, compact and full of echoes of former glory. We found the city itself to be the main attraction, and enjoyed spending time in the parks and admiring buildings like the opera house and the flat house. Plus, there’s the mother-in-law bridge, the City Gardens, and the Potemkin steps, among many other landmarks.
Kiev
The main sights of Kiev include the the Friendship Arch, the Mother Motherland monument, Maidan square in the centre of town, Khreshchatyk Street, and a multitude of churches and monasteries. We enjoyed strolling the streets and exploring a cave monastery, but our week there was certainly not long enough.

Odessa
We’re off to explore the literary side of London in the rain (it’s cultural), so soon we’ll post some damp pics of the U.K. capital. Until then, here’s a photo of a gorgeous building in Odessa.

Kiev
The People’s Friendship Arch in Kiev, Ukraine was constructed in 1982 to commemorate the union between Ukraine and Russia. The relationship is not quite as happy now…

Spot quiz: how many tourists can you see in this photo? This is the Kiev Lavra monastery, founded in either 1051 or 1077 (some time ago, either way) and is an enormous complex of churches, other buildings, and caves — some of which host the mummified bodies of some of the monks who have lived here over the centuries. It was an amazing place to visit.
