During my first-ever visit to San Miguel de Allende on assignment for TravelAge West, my husband Angel and I were guests at El Meson, a lovely small hotel in the historic city center. One of the hottest vacation destinations today in Mexico, San Miguel de Allende is a small city with a beautiful, colonial-era downtown, and El Meson is one of several hotels set in historic buildings that offers guests a combination of central location and attractive amenities. This is a review of our experience at the hotel.
THE AMBIANCE: Historic architecture blends well with a bit of trendy style in the lobby of El Meson hotel. The lobby is centered around a stylish-looking restaurant and flows into a rear courtyard with a small swimming pool. Check-in was efficient and courteous.
THE GUEST ROOMS: We stayed in room 3, an attractive, two-floor junior suite with a rather dreamy romantic vibe. The first floor is occupied by a sitting room with couch, table and dresser, as well as a single bed. Up the small staircase, on the second floor, is a super-cute small bedroom with a curved, painted ceiling, a bathroom and a very comfortable double bed (another excellent option: the more spacious — albeit one-level — deluxe rooms, which have king-size beds).
The upstairs bedroom in the junior suite has pleasant decor — I especially loved the hand-painted curved walls and ceiling — as well as amenities including a flat-screen TV with cable, air conditioning and free WiFi. The bathroom has a shower stall and all the necessary bath amenities.
HOTEL FEATURES: The attractive rear courtyard in this San Miguel de Allende hotel is a true oasis in the middle of the city, with a swimming pool surrounded by lounge chairs and couches, providing an inviting space in which to relax. There is also a spa and restaurant, as well as a trendy-looking bar.
The central location of this San Miguel de Allende hotel is ideal for walking and touring; the main square is just three blocks away, and most of the historic downtown’s biggest attractions — as well as a wide variety of restaurants, shops and bars — are within a five- or 10-minute walk.
BEST FOR: El Meson Hotel is best for leisure travelers looking for a quiet, comfortable hotel in San Miguel de Allende, within walking distance of the city’s main tourist sites as well as dining and nightlife.
RATES: About $191 and up (including free WiFi).
