With the UK enjoying an incredible heatwave in the last few weeks, it’s tempting to take advantage of the gorgeous weather and go on a holiday closer to home. The weather may not always be this predictable, but when the sun’s out there is nothing quite like a good British seaside holiday or a weekend spent hiking in the Lakes. Only this weekend I drove from London down to Bournemouth to soak up the rays on Boscombe Beach and it felt just as good as being abroad. However I often find that hotels and B&Bs can be fairly pricey at this time of year, so camping seems like the much more affordable (and fun) alternative if you need somewhere to stay!
The guide is really well laid out with plenty of maps and colourful pictures to help you plan your trip. Covering regions all over the UK including Scotland, the Lake District, Yorkshire, Wales, Norfolk, Gloucestershire, Devon and Cornwall, this light, small booklet is really handy if you need that little bit of inspiration for your next camping holiday.
Take Devon for example, where I spent many summers as a kid. The guide recommends Powderham Castle, Dartmoor and the National Marine Aquarium, all of which I have visited! You could pitch up your tent in Woodovis Park or Teign Valley, then spend a day cycling the Drakes Trail, which links Tavistock with Plymouth. There are also lots of events going on over the summer, including Devon County Show, Oceanfest and Flavour Fest – a three day food and drink festival held in the centre of Plymouth.
Ready to hit the great outdoors? Halfords have a great range of camping tents too – I’m definitely considering picking up a cheap tent and heading down to Devon for some me-time this summer. My Mum used to take me down to the beaches of Salcombe, Thurlestone and Hope Cove as a child, so I have some really fond memories of playing in the waves, looking for fish in the rock pools and lighting up a barbecue in the evenings. I haven’t been back in such a long time, so it would be nice to take a trip down memory lane!
