Though the price of a gorilla tour is steep (around $750 a visit) and often cheaper elsewhere, those who forego a gorilla tour in Rwanda miss out on the golden monkeys – so rare that they are only found in the bamboo forest near the gorillas’ main habitat.

This, more than any other place in the Congo, is where you can see endangered mountain gorillas up close and personal. The chain of volcanoes along the northern border of Rwanda offers intense gorilla safaris, gorilla trekking, and several national parks.

Another stronghold of the mountain gorilla, Volcanoes National Park gets its name from, you guessed it, volcanoes in the park. Covered by rainforest, marshes and swamps, open meadows, and grasslands, this is a perfect habitat for the gorillas, as well as buffalo and spotted hyenas.
