Tanzanian Vice President, Samia Suluhu Hassan, recently launched a World Bank-funded project aimed at promoting tourist destinations in the country’s southern tourist circuit.
The Resilient Natural Resource Management for Tourism and Growth (REGROW) project aims to assist with improvements to tourist-linked infrastructure.
Hassan described REGROW as a way to unleash the tourism potential of the country’s southern circuit, an area rich in tourist destinations but difficult to access as it lacks adequate roads and airstrips. Its attractions include the historic areas of Kalenga and Isimila, the Stone Age site in the Iringa region, the Mbozi meteorite crater in the Songwe Region, Kalambo Falls in the Rukwa region, Lake Ngozi and Lake Nyasa’s beaches in the Mbeya region, and pristine beaches on the shores of the Indian Ocean in Mtwara and Lindi regions.
Tanzania’s Minister of Natural Resources and Tourism, Hamis Kigwangalla, said the launch of the project would improve the economic opportunities of communities living around Tanzania’s southern national parks.
