A few months ago I reviewed the Lily Cup Compact menstrual cup as an alternative method to tampons. Having never used a menstrual cup before it was a bit of a learning curve, but now I’ve switched I’ll never go back!
This month I’ve been testing the Lily Cup from INTIMINA.com, which is bigger than the Lily Cup Compact and doesn’t collapse. Instead of carrying it around in a little case, it comes with a cloth pouch. It may be a little less portable, but it seems to contain my heavy flow slightly more than the compact version. I’ve noticed that it’s a little more tricky to insert due to its larger size, but once it’s in it’s still extremely comfortable throughout the day. I’ve decided that my Lily Cup will be best when my period is at its heaviest and when I’m at home, while the Lily Cup Compact will be better for when I’m on the road.
Now that I have two menstrual cups, I can’t see myself ever using tampons again. Here’s why:
Menstrual cups are great for travel
Trying to squeeze hundreds of tampons into your wash bag when packing to go abroad can be a pain. With a menstrual cup, there’s just one item to carry around. I just pop the Lily Cup Compact into my handbag and take it wherever I go. This means I’ll never be caught out when I’m travelling, and I no longer have to worry about urgent trips to the nearest pharmacy/grocery store when I realise I’ve run out of tampons.
They’re more comfortable and less drying
Now that I’ve been using menstrual cups for several months, I’ve noticed just how much more uncomfortable tampons can be. Tampons are drying and the strings can get in the way. Have you ever worn a bikini at the beach, only to look down and realise your tampon string is hanging out? With a menstrual cup there’s no need to worry about that and once it’s in, you can’t feel it at all.
They’re more economical
Buying boxes of tampons every month gets expensive. Purchasing a menstrual cup may cost more up front, but at least you can use it for years and years. In the end, menstrual cups work out cheaper and more economical because they don’t need replacing every month.
Longer protection
I have quite a heavy flow, so when I wear tampons I find I have to pop to the loo replace them on a regular basis. With the Lily Cup I still have to empty it, but it can be worn for up to 12 hours. This means I can just pop it in, forget about it and get on with my day.
No more tampons in the bin
Menstrual cups are more eco-friendly and limit your impact on the environment. You won’t be throwing tampons away anymore, which means you won’t have a bin full of them. A trash can full of tampons wrapped in tissue can be smelly and quite gross when you come to empty it!
** My verdict **
Of course, the menstrual cups have their pros and cons, which I highlighted in my first review. But for me the pros far outweight the cons. I did find that after some months of use my Lily Cup Compact started to stain and get an odour, but I soaked it in hydrogen peroxide overnight and it seemed to do the trick. In the long run my menstrual cup is saving me money, making my periods more comfortable and travel much easier.
The Lily Cup costs £24.95 and is available from INTIMINA.com. They’re also offering up to 15% off menstrual products until December 25th – great for Christmas gifts!
