Paris might be home to some of the world’s greatest galleries. But you don’t have to step foot in any of them to find some inspirational art.
Shepard Fairey
One of the most famous street artists in the world – American Shepard Fairey designed the iconic HOPE posters for President Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign.
Fairey has created several pieces around Paris, including an installation at the Eiffel Tower. You can find several of his murals in the 13th Arrondissement, which were created in 2016 to accompany an exhibition of Fairey’s art at the Galerie Itinerrance – an art gallery devoted to graffiti.
David de la Mano
Spanish artist David de la Mano started his career creating installations and sculptures in the early 90s, and moved into murals in 2008. Known for his minimal style paintings, created in stark black and white, a particularly good example of de la Mano’s work can be found on Rue Jenner on the Left Bank, right by a piece by Paris’ own street art star, Invader.
Vhils
Portuguese artist Vhils studied at the prestigious Central St Martins art school in London, and has been compared to Banksy. He is known for his “relief portraits”, created by drilling directly into walls to reveal the layers of paint, posters and plaster underneath. You can find a particularly good example on Rue du Château-des-Rentiers in the Salpêtrière district.
Pejac
Named after the famous 19th century artist, and impressionist pioneer, Rue Édouard Manet in the 13th Arrondissement already has an exceptional artistic pedigree. And Spanish street artist Pejac pays tribute to street’s namesake in his piece Vandal-ism. You can see also see Manet’s original masterpiece which inspired Pejac’s work, Le Déjeuner sur l’herbe, in the city’s famous Musée d’Orsay.
