Did you know the average refund amount is $3,120? Sure, that doesn’t mean everyone gets one that big, but with that amount as a national average, it’s surprising that Americans in general need to be practically forced to travel.
Only about 6.5% of people said they would take a trip (and less than 1% said they would use the money to go out on the town), but almost 20% said they wanted to do a combination of all the choices. Of those who said they’d take a trip…
35% of respondents said they wanted to go somewhere warm and beachy, like Hawaii. This is hardly surprising, given that our tax returns arrive just as winter is coming to a close (and people are sick and tired of the cold, yo.)

24% of people said they wanted to get out and enjoy nature, particularly at natural wonders like Yosemite National Park or the Grand Canyon.

What motivates people to travel?
Unsurprisingly, relaxation is the number one reason why people travel – “to get away from it all.” (34% of respondents gave this as their reason.) But close behind (at 29%) was “exploration,” followed by “experiencing culture” (at 13.3%), and then visiting family and friends (12.5%.)
When asked if they could send one person on an all-expenses paid trip, respondents primarily chose their spouse or significant other, followed closely behind by “Mom” (which far outweighed the responses that chose “Dad.”) Nearly 15% would send their child, some would only send themselves, and a few would choose their best friend (even over a brother or sister.)
