United has entered into a settlement agreement with David Dao, the passenger who was injured and dragged off United Express Flight 3411 on April 9 by Chicago Department of Aviation police.
The amount of settlement is confidential, the Chicago law firm of Corboy & Demetrio said.
In a statement, Dao’s attorney Thomas Demetrio noted that the settlement comes the same day that United announced a combination of policy changes and initiatives geared toward improving its customer service.
“Dr. Dao has become the unintended champion for the adoption of changes which will certainly help improve the lives of literally millions of travelers,” Demetrio said.
He also praised Untied CEO Oscar Munoz for taking full responsibility for the Flight 3411 incident.
United issued its own brief statement Thursday, noting that it had reached an amicable settlement with Dao.
“We look forward to implementing the improvements we have announced, which will put our customers at the center of everything we do,” the carrier said.
Nine of the 10 policy changes and initiatives put forward by United since the Dao incident address issues relating to overbooking and denied boarding of ticketed passengers.
According to Demetrio, Dao lost two teeth and sustained a concussion and a broken nose at the hands of O’Hare airport police after he refused to give up his seat to crew members from Republic Airways, the regional airline that United contracts to operate Flight 3411.
