Private companies will soon be contracted by Uganda to market the country’s tourism sector in all China’s provinces.
In an interview with Xinhua, the official press agency of the People’s Republic of China, Chairperson of Uganda Tourism Board, Daudi Migereko, said that although tourists from China totalled 123 million annually, Uganda was receiving only 19 175 of them.
The Ugandan embassy in Beijing and the consulate in Guangzhou were doing a satisfactory job, revealed Migereko. “Also, there are many investment opportunities in tourism and other sectors such as mining, agriculture and manufacturing. These are areas we can work on together with the Chinese to benefit both countries.”
He said several Ugandan universities had already introduced courses to study Chinese, and many Ugandans had been sent to China as a way of improving the two countries’ relations, so that when Chinese visitors came to Uganda, they would find guides who understood their language.
“Uganda has been active in the Chinese market and we are now prioritising it as major area for current and future tourism growth. Uganda participated in the Guangzhou expo in 2017, translated a Uganda country guide into Chinese and has hosted Chinese operators in Uganda to showcase what we can offer,” said Migereko.
The Ugandan government will send a team of tourism sector players and technocrats to China to try to market the country’s offerings. The team is set to leave Uganda on March 11.
