U.S. airlines carried a record 823 million passengers in 2016, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, topping 2015’s record 798 million passengers by 3.1%.
Domestic flyers made up 719 million of the passengers while 104 million passengers flew internationally.
Last year was the seventh in a row in which passenger numbers on U.S. airlines grew following a two-year decline during the Great Recession of 2008 and 2009.
Despite the growth, airplanes weren’t quite as full in 2016. U.S. carriers filled 83.4% of their seats last year, down from 83.8% in 2015. Capacity, measured by the number total seats offered on flights multiplied by the total number miles the flights traveled, rose 3.9%.
