Who doesn’t love looking into the future and speculating about what’s coming (at least, outside of the political realm)? People have been predicting the future for thousands of years, with varying methods and degrees of accuracy. In 2017, instead of scrying coffee grounds and crystal balls, we tend to crunch numbers. Here at Trip.com, we dug into the data to see which destinations are on the rise – both internationally and in the U.S. Plus, we had a look at destinations getting a little less love – but worth keeping in mind anyway.
The Rising Stars list brought us all a bit of hope this year. It’s one of the most international we’ve seen…perhaps a sign that people are still excited about exploring the world and learning about other cultures.
Topping the list was Adelaide, Australia (noted for its amazing access to nature including Kangaroo Island), seconded by Cuba. Colombia’s landmark peace deal is making it a great place to visit, and artistic mountain city Medellin made the list.

Stateside, nostalgia seems to be winning the day. No less than 4 retro-kitsch beach towns made the list (including Myrtle Beach and Hollywood, FL) plus the Poconos, formerly most famous for heart-shaped hot tubs.

And finally – on the decline? Mexican yoga paradise Tulum, and funky Melbourne Australia, for two, just might be a little less crowded next year. Phew!
