The Forest of Dean is a fascinating region in Britain. It is located amidst the Vale of Leadon, the Wye Valley and the Severn Vale. Also referred to as the ‘queen of forests’, it is one of the best-known tourist attractions in the country. It was first designated by the Saxons for the purpose of hunting. Later on, as more people became aware of its potential, it became the hunting reserve of kings for several centuries. The Norman kings loved to hunt wild boar and deer and they introduced Forest law and officials known as Verderers who were given the responsibility of looking after the woods and the animals.
The place is enchanting and has a character that is uniquely its own. More than 20 million trees such as beech, birch, ash, oak and holly trees cover the area. The spectacular landscape and stunning scenery have inspired poets and playwrights, artists, inventors, craftspeople, as well as thousands of visitors who return year after year.
If you visit the forest during the months of April and May, you can enjoy the magnificent azaleas, rhododendrons and the flowering shrubs at Lydney park Spring Gardens. You can also see some of the best Roman relics here. May is a time when the area transforms into a beautiful carpet of bluebells. The visual treat combined with the heady smell never fails to charm visitors. The Royal forest is at its best during the autumn when the mighty trees turn golden and there are autumn fruits and berries available. It’s a great time to enjoy walks on the several trails in the forest.
Clearwell Caves
The Forest of Dean is also home to the famous Clearwell caves. It is an iron mining museum that has a system of underground caverns that go back to the beginning of the bronze age.
Forest Museum
The forest has its own museum that has an extensive collection of artifacts that depict the historical importance of the region.
Activities
Apart from exploring the area by car, the forest is an excellent place for an activity holiday. You can spend your days riding cycle tracks by mountain bike or riding a boat down the River Wye or swinging along zip-wires. There are several adventure centers, steam railways, galleries, craft shops and some great restaurants and tea rooms.
