For many of us, it’s the thought of a relaxing break away that gets us through the monotony of daily life and work. The chance to have some peace and quiet and leave the drudgery of every-day behind us for a short time. Sadly, though, less than half of holidaymakers who venture abroad report feeling relaxed on their return; here are some tips for getting the most out of your holiday, and helping you to feel relaxed for longer.
- Eat healthy
The temptation when you’re on holiday is often to eat whatever you want whenever you want – after all, you’re on holiday! But just because you can let go of your healthy diet doesn’t mean you necessarily should. Spending two weeks loading up on unhealthy foods and staying sedentary around the pool is a recipe for tiredness; loading up on sugary snacks affects your blood sugar levels and the lack of exercise can make you lethargic. Stay in tune and relaxed by eating plenty of fruit and veg, and drinking enough fluids to ensure you remain hydrated.
- Go for walks
Enjoy the breath-taking scenery of your destination by going for lengthy walks. Pack plenty of water to stay hydrated and cover yourself in sun-cream if you’re journeying to somewhere hot. Walking outdoors is scientifically proven to encourage feelings of calmness and relaxation and releases more endorphins that a stint in the gym. Staying physically active helps to keep your mind active, too. Swimming is another good form of exercise, whether it be in the pool or the sea. If you are swimming in the sea, though, be sure to take heed of the rules of the beach and to only swim in designated safe zones.
- Do something new
Try something new on your travels, such as learning a new language, trying the local cuisine and bagging yourself a few recipes to try at home, or by doing something adventurous like learning to scuba dive! Keeping your mind and body switched on by mastering new skills will help you to feel alert and calm on your travels. Trying your hand at the local lingo will also help you when it comes to interacting with the residents of your destination and will help you feel more at one with your surroundings.
- Get a back massage
Enjoy a luxurious back massage or spa day on your holiday. Back massages in general are good for reducing feelings of stress and anxiety and may be able to reduce pain in some individuals. Back massages are naturally relaxing and can promote calmness and clarity of mind – the perfect thing when you’re abroad. Massage isn’t just the stuff of holidays, though; continue to feel good by having massages at home with a back massager chair or something similar. Yoga is another good way of winding down on holiday and it’s common for yoga classes to be held for tourists on the beach. Well-being classes typically incorporate yoga, massage and meditation, and are commonly offered to tourists.
- Leave home at home
Switch your phone off, stop panicking about not having internet, and don’t worry about work. The purpose of going on holiday is to get away from the stress from daily life and enjoy spending some time alone, either with yourself, your friends, or your family. Let your mind be free by leaving work at home and enjoying the moments at home. Time will pass all too quickly and before you know it you’ll be back home wishing you hadn’t worried about sending that email!
