You can get a fresh brewed cup o’ joe in just about any town in America, but it takes a special sort of place — one with a passion for all things sourcing, roasting, and brewing — to really be a coffee city that meets the standards of the “third wave” (the movement to turn coffee from a commodity into a high-quality, artisanal drink). If you are looking for more than just a quick caffeine fix, these spots, chosen based on Gogobot users’ ratings and reviews, are where you’ll want to head next. Check them out and then, when you get inspired to go on a coffee-centric tour of the country, start looking for your hotel here.
1. Seattle, Washington
Though Starbucks may soak up most of the buzz, there are many other institutions here, both old and new, that make Seattle the No. 1 spot to get a coffee in the U.S.

2. Portland, Oregon

The good folks of Portland are perhaps even more serious about coffee than they are about flannel. From high end machines to champion baristas, Oregon’s hipster hub has all the elements of a snooty coffee city (and we mean that in a good way).

In a metro area as sprawling as LA, it’s surprisingly easy to locate a good coffee shop, with more and more popping up each day.

4. San Francisco, California

Micro-roasting, cold brew, pour over… you name it — if it’s a trend in coffee, someone in San Francisco has done it.

Ritual Coffee Roasters
5. Austin, Texas

Austin may be a newer entry onto the trendy coffee scene, but it didn’t take long for the city to become completely, totally, head-over-heels obsessed.

Caffe Medici

Yes, you can grab a cup from one of two shall-not-be-named chains (that rhyme with shmarbucks and drunkin dronuts) on just about any street corner in the city, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t a number of smaller shops with high-quality brews, perfect for local and visiting coffee aficionados. Brooklyn, especially, has some superb independent brands worth checking out.

Cafe Grumpy
Brooklyn Roasting Company
Ninth Street Espresso
7. Kailua-Kona, Hawaii

Hawaii is the only state in the nation that grows coffee commercially, so it’s fitting that there are tons of great coffee shops, especially in and around Kailua-Kona, where you can get a taste of the homegrown beans.

Island Lava Java
The Kona Coffee and Tea Company
Daylight Mind Coffee Company
8. Sacramento, California

Many cities in California think of coffee brewing as an art form, so it’s no surprise that the state’s capital also waves that flag high. Sacramento, which is becoming hipper by the minute, has lots of good spots for a cup.

Temple Coffee
Insight Coffee Roasters
Old Soul at the Weatherstone
9. San Luis Obispo, California

Known better for its location in the middle of Central California’s wine country, and for being the home of Cal Poly, SLO is also developing its reputation for delicious coffee (which, we imagine, is much appreciated by both the students and anyone recovering from a wine hangover).
Where to sip:
Scout Coffee Co
Kreuzberg Coffee Company
Linnaeas Cafe
10. Kansas City, Missouri

Yes, it’s true: Kansas City, the lone Midwest contender on this list, has a booming coffee culture, with fancy brewing machines, local roasters, and all. This is yet another example of Kansas City really not getting enough credit for how cool it is ().
Where to sip:
Thou Mayest Coffee Roasters
Oddly Correct Coffee
The Roasterie
