For 2017, International Living has issued its ranking of the best places to retire around the world. And we’ve picked out the Latin American destinations that are the big winners. Mexico: It’s no surprise that Mexico ranks high on International Living’s list of the best places to retire around the world — in fact, it ranks as the number-one place. Economic prices, proximity and accessibility are a few of the reasons. You can live well here in a variety of destinations — including Mexico beach vacation destinations like Puerto Vallarta and the Riviera Maya, for example — and if you get residency, you’ll enjoy a variety of benefits and discounts on everyday living.
Panama: Central America’s most modern nation scores high, as the number two choice for retirees, according to International Living. IL Panama editor Jessica Ramesch praised Panama’s excellent cellular and Internet connections and its retiree benefits, which make it easy for foreigners to obtain residency and get discounts on travel, healthcare, hotels and restaurants.
Ecuador: International Living ranks Ecuador at number three, as it’s ranked high on IL’s Global Retirement Index for a long time. Pleasant weather, superior healthcare and great retiree benefits (including discounts from airlines and movie theaters) are among the reasons why Ecuador is a great place to retire. Plus, it’s four distinct regions (the jungle, the mountainous highlands around Quito and Cuenca, the coastal region and the Galapagos Islands) ensure you’ll never get bored, since there are so many distinct regions to visit.
Costa Rica: Ranked as 4th best by International Living, thanks to its safety, stability and “straightforward process” for getting resident status. International Living also emphasizes this Central American nation’s diverse climates and excellent healthcare. Costa Rica has been a long-running favorite for both vacations and retirement.
Colombia: This South American nation ranked as the 5th best place to retire by International Living, which praised Colombia‘s friendly and welcoming people, economical prices and variety of destinations — including Caribbean beach town Santa Marta and sophisticated cities Bogotá and Medellín.
Nicaragua: Ranked as 8th with International Living, for reasons including improved highways and infrastructure, the growth of San Juan del Sur as a “foodie town as well as a surf town” and the ease of getting a resident’s card and opening businesses. International Living says that a couple can live well here for $1,500 a month.
