Road trips are one of the best ways to travel around Europe. Yes it may be slower compared to booking direct flights, but driving abroad is a really fun experience, allowing you to visit lots of different towns along the way. There’s nothing quite like driving with the window down, gazing out at the scenery and having the freedom to go wherever you want. I’ve done lots of road trips over the years in Australia and the UK but one of my dreams is to drive around Europe. Here are 5 destinations to drive in Europe from the UK – these are definitely on my bucket list!
French Riviera, France
The Cote d’Azur is a vibrant stretch of coastline located in southern France. It is packed with twisting mountain roads, white sand beaches that lead to the Azure waters, ancient hilltop towns, and posh holiday destinations. This makes it a naturally stunning part of Europe and the best way to appreciate it is by driving through the picturesque French Riviera. For travelers who do not wish to check in new hotels daily during their stay, they could select a base and run day trips daily. However, it’s preferable to stay in different cities along the drive since various cities come out best in the evening and at first light. To get an inkling of the distance involved, from Monte Carlo-St Tropez is only 120 kilometers and a three-hour drive even for those using the winding coastal motorway. Travelers can, therefore, see the best the French Riviera has to offer in a span of 3 days.
Bruges in Belgium
A trip to Belgium often means ample amounts of chocolates and waffles, this in itself should keep kids and chocolate lovers blissful on the ride to Bruges. Driving through Bruges offers its travelers a scenic journey due to the City’s undeniable beauty. For those with families, particularly children Bruges would be a perfect destination site. From a child’s perspective, Bruges is Exhilarating due to the numerous chocolate shops there, these shops are heaped with elaborate edible creations making them even more attractive. Bruges also has a lot to offer for history buffs, its ancient residential districts situated around the cathedral are places full of history and culture.
Alpine Road, Germany – Neuschwanstein Castle
This is one of Europe’s classic drives. It is a designated and attractive route that twists along the edges of the Bavarian Alps. The Alpine road is much more fascinating than the “Romantic Road” which is more popular. This is because it is dotted with snowy mountain crests, ancient forests, lush alpine fields and all this is punctuated by several lakes and fairy tale castles. Along the way, travelers could pass through the winter sports resort known as Garmisch. Garmisch is situated under Zugspitze, Germany’s highest peak. Travelers could also make stops at King Ludwig’s Linderhof and Neuschwanstein castles that will leave you with fond memories.
Basque Country, Spain
Spain is among the top three holiday destinations frequented by British tourists and the best way to see everything is by traveling by road. The semi-autonomous region of Basque Country located in Northern Spain has a lot to offer its holidaymakers. The culture in Basque Country is spectacular, and surely if the culture is not enough enticement, it must be the food. In Basque Country, the bars and restaurants have bar snacks similar to tapas and preparing pinxtos that ensure food is an art form. This is shown by the high number of Michelin Star hotels located in San Sebastian, Basque which is only second to Tokyo in this regard.
Porto, Portugal
One of the best travel ideas is a road trip along the Portuguese coastline particularly along Porto. The Atlantic Ocean acts as Porto’s backdrop. The traditional city of Porto is characterized by vibrant local markets, narrow streets and mind blowing buildings. Porto is also a leading destination for wine enthusiasts who make pilgrimages to this ancient city to appreciate wine as an art. Porto is full of history, and as a result, it is an ideal destination for a city that combines history and cultural discovery. Porto also enjoys an alluring pan-Iberian atmosphere that compliments its many historical gems. The Ribeira district in Porto is filled with UNESCO World Heritage monuments and spots. The warm and inviting locals of Porto also make discovering this enthralling city an enjoyable and unforgettable experience.
