Summer travel to Mexico will drop ‘significantly,’ Allianz predicts

Summer vacation travel from the U.S. to Mexico will drop “significantly” this year, according to Allianz Global Assistance.

While Cancun remains the top international destination from the U.S. this year, it will account for only 10.5% of international travel, down from 15.7% last year and 16.9% in 2017.

Allianz based its data on customer trips planned from May 24 to Sept. 3.

“Mexico’s defunding of the Mexico Tourism Board and closure of its international offices are dramatically impacting visitation at a time when U.S. State Department alerts have spiked due to crime and drug violence,” Allianz said in a statement.

Following Cancun, Aruba is the most popular destination this year, up from No. 6 last year. Third this year is San Jose del Cabo, Mexico, up from No. 5 last year. Nassau is again the fourth most popular international destination, and rounding out the top five is Higuey, Dominican Republic, which was No. 2 last year.

Rounding out the top 10 are, in order: Montego Bay, Jamaica (No. 3 last year); Providenciales, Turks and Caicos (No. 10 last year); San Juan (No. 8 last year); Puerto Vallarta, Mexico (not on the list last year); and Grand Cayman (not on the list last year).

In a statement, Daniel Durazo, director of communications at Allianz, said this is the first time the top 10 international destinations are all in the Caribbean and Mexico. London and Paris made the list last year as Nos. 7 and 9, respectively, as well as in 2017, when London was No. 7 and Paris was No. 10.

Domestically, Orlando remains the top destination, and New York retains its No. 2 rank. The rest of the top 10 are, in order: Seattle (up from No. 7 last year); Las Vegas (No. 3 last year); Boston (No. 8 last year); Los Angeles (No. 4 last year); Maui (not on the list last year); Honolulu (No. 5 last year); San Francisco (No. 10 last year); and Portland, Ore., (not on the list last year).
