MONACO — On a clear, windy night here, Princess Charlene of Monaco christened the Seven Seas Explorer, the first new ship to be built for Regent Seven Seas Cruises in 13 years.
Tenor Andrea Bocelli sang “Nessun Dorma,” three religious leaders blessed the ship and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings CEO Frank Del Rio again called the ship the most luxurious ever built.
“Monte Carlo can now add the christening of Explorer to her long list of accolades that makes this jewel of a principality truly unique in the world,” Del Rio said.
“I cannot be prouder of the team, or of the ship itself.”
The event was attended by more than 700 Regent employees, media, vendors, travel agents and other dignitaries who were seated on the floating cruise dock in Monte Carlo for the event.
“I christen this ship Seven Seas Explorer. God bless her and all those who sail on her,” said Princess Charlene, moments before snipping a ribbon that sent a bottle of champagne to burst on the side of the ship.
Afterwards, Bocelli sang a dozen songs ranging from opera to popular hits.
The ship departed later in the evening on its maiden voyage. Costing in excess of $450 million, the 750-passenger ship is among the most expensive cruise ships built on a per-berth basis.
It was billed as “the most luxurious cruise ship ever” in Regent’s marketing messages.
