The texture is my favorite thing about Ciuri Ciuri. It’s like sticking your tongue into cold velvet. Bonus! They have amazing, authentic Sicilian cannoli.
Find it near: in Rione Monti
What to order: Pistacchio (and a cannolo)
Gelateria Petrini

If this place were located in the historic center, it would be mobbed by tourists. As it is, the locals mob it each warm evening and it gets decent business all winter too, the gelato is so good. They concentrate on refined flavors based on Italian ingredients, and have been doing it for the last 70 years.
Find it near: Piazza dell’Alberone at the Furio Camillo metro
What to order: Menta Romana, Crema di Limone, Passito di Pantelleria
Gelarmony

Super Sicilian, and a great place for vegans as they also have gelato di soia. The texture is right on point and the flavors strong. Extra bonus: they are next door to an Arancini place, so you can indulge your taste for fried rice balls at the same time.
Find it near: Prati
What to order: Panna
Il Gelato di San Crispino

It’s more expensive and has smaller servings than some other amazing spots, but it’s been around forever and for good reason.

What to order: Miele (Honey)
Old Bridge Gelateria

Old Bridge is basically a tiny counter with very good gelato.

What to Order: Nocciola, Fragola (Hazelnut or Strawberry)
Fassi
by: Brad Bernard – Courtesy: Trip.com
This cavernous spot has been open since around 1880, and makes some of the city’s best. It’s well known among locals but one of the less touristy spots you can visit.
Find it Near: Piazza Vittorio/Termini
What to Order: Yogurt, Riso
Fatamorgana
If you’re a fan of, say, Humphry Slocombe in SF, or just excited to sample modern Roman awesomeness, try Fatamorgana for authentic make and creative flavors.
Find it near: Rione Monti, Prati and north of Nomentana
What to order: Cioccolato Lapsang Souchong (smoky tea chocolate) and Basilico (basil).
Note: I purposefully left Giolitti off, mainly because I always found it to be overcrowded and over-rated. Some people (including fellow Tripsters) will vehemently disagree! What are your favorite gelato spots? Do you know a great one that’s not here? Let us know in the comments.
