The arrival of the “heat” increased the number of overnight stays in Portuguese hotels. But growth was not as strong in July as it was in June.
Portuguese tourism industry registered 2.2 million guests and 6.9 million overnight stays in July 2017. These are increases of 6.1% and 4.8%. In June, both numbers increased by 9.1% and 7.2%, respectively.
Data released by the National Institute of Statistics show encouraging numbers, such as the return of dormant growth in the domestic market – 3% in July compared to 0.4% in June. But they also showed some negative signs, such as the slowdown in foreign markets – 5.4% in July compared to 10.2% in June.
The average stay fell by 1.4% to about 3.11 nights per guest. The bed occupancy rate increased by 1.3 percentage points to 67.3%.
Total revenue growth of the Portuguese tourism slowed down to 13.1% (17.2% in June), reaching 428.7 million euros. Room revenues reached 327.3 million euros and also slowed down a bit, growing by 15.2% compared to 19.2% in June.
The number of overnight stays in hotels (64.8% of the total) showed a growth of 5.7%. The other categories also registered positive developments, especially tourist apartments (9.8%) and inns (7.4%). However, hotel-apartments registered a slight decrease (-0.5%).
