What if you had to give up an item you use on a regular basis? Even something you love?
That’s exactly what I did this week, when MoneySupermarket invited me to take part in their One Week Energy Challenge.
The aim of the challenge is to highlight how we take our favourite items for granted and to see what happens if we don’t have them anymore. Think about it; if energy bills were too high and you couldn’t afford to use your Nutribullet or your laptop, what impact would that have on your life?
Their suggestions of household items to give up included giving up the microwave, the TV, my camera, my car, or even my mobile phone (panic attack!). As a blogger it would be a bit of a nightmare to give up my mobile phone or my laptop, so I settled for giving up another item I use daily: my hairdryer.
Giving Up My Hairdyer
I wash my hair daily and so I usually blast it with the hairdryer before I leave the house. It’s an appliance that I use every day, without giving it much thought, so how would I fare without it?
Well to start with I kept reaching for my hairdryer after a shower, then having to remind myself I’d given it up. It’s become second nature to blow dry my hair in the mornings. Luckily my hair is fine and dries relatively quickly but it was definitely still damp when leaving the house. It’s a little bit chilly going out with wet hair but the most frustrating part was not being able to style it properly with a styling brush! Forget styled waves – my hair now has a messy, beachy vibe to it. Less city slicker, more surfer girl.
What was more interesting was other people’s reactions. My friend’s reaction was ‘You can’t go out like that, you’ll catch a cold!’ Other people looked at me and said, ‘Have you been for a swim?’
There were positives though to air drying my hair. I took less time to get ready in the morning and my hair is now in better condition because it isn’t being damaged by heat.
Usually I’ll dry my hair for about 10 minutes every day, so how much did cutting this appliance out save me? My hairdryer is a 1800-2000W hairdryer and I use it for roughly 5 hours per month.
Currently energy is prices at 14.25 pence per kWh, so once I do the maths, this amounts to roughly £1.28 per month, or £15.36 for the year.
That’s by no means going to break the bank but when it comes to money saving, every little bit counts. Would I give up my hairdryer in the long run? No. But it’s interesting to test myself and see if I can live without. I may be able to give up my hairdryer for a week but I don’t think I’m quite ready to part with my smartphone any time soon!
Fortunately, MoneySuperMarket enables you to find the right energy deals for you to save money and keep your beloved items. Should you want to try and save more money, MoneySuperMarket can provide the best possible break down of energy providers to help save you further money by switching.
