During our recent stay in Merida, Mexico this past winter, my wife and I discovered that there seems to be a local preference for good Italian food. Maybe there’s a small Italian community we didn’t know about living in Merida. Whatever the reason is we found out that there are a few good Italian cuisine restaurants in the city. On previous trips we had dined at the centrally located Tratto restaurant near the Teatro Peon Contreras and the Cathedral. Tratto is quite good, but I wouldn’t call it haute cuisine. Their tuna tartar and their pizzas are excellent by the way.
Oliva Enoteca
Oliva Enoteca, on the other hand, is more of an haute Italian cuisine restaurant. Not Michelin star haute cuisine, but definitely high-end and outstanding. I’ve eaten at excellent Italian restaurants in Tuscany (Siena, Chianti and surroundings), New York and Mexico Cities, and of course in Toronto. Enoteca Oliva is as good – and in some instances better – as any of the restaurants I’ve visited in the aforementioned cities.
