Lufthansa was the first international airline to resume scheduled services from Europe to South Africa with the warmly welcomed arrival of LH 572 at OR Tambo at 08h30 on October 1, the day borders opened.
‘’Lufthansa is delighted to be at the forefront of the resumption of commercial travel into South Africa and proud to reconnect South Africa to Germany with the first international long-haul flight to land in South Africa on the day the travel ban was lifted. South Africa remains an attractive destination for both German business travellers and holidaymakers and as Germany moves into winter, we look forward to bringing visitors back to South Africa and helping to boost the very important tourism sector again. Health and safety continue to be our top priority and we are committed to maintaining a strict adherence to hygiene regulations for all our flights,” said Dr André Schulz, gm Southern Africa & East Africa, Lufthansa Group Airlines.
Lufthansa has restarted with three weekly flights between Frankfurt and Johannesburg and two weekly flights between Frankfurt and Cape Town.
The flight from Frankfurt to Johannesburg operates on Sundays, Tuesdays and Fridays, using a Boeing 747-8, and offers passengers seats in all four classes, including first class.
From October 9, the carrier will also operate a twice-weekly flight from Frankfurt to Cape Town on Sundays and Thursdays using an Airbus A340-300.
All flights are night-time departures, landing in their destinations the next morning.
The new winter flight schedule will begin on October 25, and this includes additional frequencies.
The Lufthansa Group has put in place special hygiene measures to protect passengers and employees. These apply not only on board, but also before and after the journey. Details can be found at www.lufthansa.com/de/en/protection-measures. Passengers must check travel and destination entry requirements before departure.
Passengers will need a COVID-19 test within 72 hours of departing for SA. Lufthansa and its partners offer COVID-19 polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests at walk-in testing centres within Frankfurt, Munich and Hamburg airports. Results are delivered within a few hours. Passengers should register online at lufthansa.com prior to arrival for testing.
