While there are a few big chain hotels in Santiago, Chile, many of the best options are small boutique hotels with attentive service and a story to tell. We recently added a new one to our reviews: Hotel Luciano K in the Barrio Lastarria neighborhood.
It’s hard to believe now, but this seven-story building was the tallest in Chile when it went up in 1928. It was also the first with central heating and the first to have an elevator.
You can still ride in that original cage elevator and the “K” in the name refers to the last initial of the architect. The developers clearly took the original aesthetic seriously and this is a hotel that balances modern room amenities with a respectful nod to the past.
There are 38 guest rooms that are equipped with all that you’d expect, from air-conditioning to Wi-Fi, with hardwood floors and marble sinks in the baths. There’s no coffee maker, but you get a robe, slippers, a minibar, and nightly turndown service. Avoid the interior rooms that face another part of the building and go for one with a park view, or better yet upgrade to a suite with more space to spread out. Then head up to the room for a panoramic view.
One of the Luciano K’s most attractive spaces is the rooftop terrace, where the hotel’s bar and casual restaurant have views across the city. You even have views down to the lobby: while most of the terrace floor is constructed from colorful square tiles, a small section is made of glass, where you can see all the way down to the lobby level.
Also on the rooftop is a narrow swimming pool, where you can take in the views while you float or paddle around.
There’s also a dining spot on the roof, where you can order cocktails or ceviche. A full restaurant on the ground level looks across to the park and that’s where a continental buffet breakfast—included in the rates—is spread out each morning.
If you like to be in a walkable neighborhood with some shade and greenery nearby, Hotel Luciano K offers a more intimate experience and more character than the larger chain hotels in the business districts.
