The situation in Lamu Island is calm and the rest of the country is stable and secure, according to the Kenya Tourism Federation (KTF).
This follows what is being referred to as an “attempted security breach” on Sunday in Lamu County, Kenya. The breach resulted in a fire breaking out that spread to some nearby fuel tanks. However, the fire has been extinguished and standard security measures have been put in place, according to Kenya Defence Forces.
Chairman of the KTF, Mohammed Hersi, said in a statement that all transport was operating as scheduled, including the train connection between Nairobi and Mombasa, and at each of the cities’ international airports.
The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority has further announced that the temporary closure of the Lamu civilian airstrip has been lifted and it is now open for normal operations.
Lamu Island, which is the main tourist attraction in Lamu County, is a tiny fraction of the area. Tourists can safely visit the island by flying to the mainland at Manda and crossing the channel.
To put things into perspective, Manda (where Lamu is located) is more than 800km from Nairobi, 1 000km from Masai Mara, and 250km from Mombasa
