Kenya Railways’ (KR) Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) operation has launched a second daily train service between Nairobi and Mombasa, connecting several counties along the way.
The initial train service only stopped over in Mtito Andei, the halfway station en-route to Mombasa. The new service allows passengers to embark and disembark at Athi River, Emali, Kibwezi, Mtito Andei, Voi, Miasenyi and Mariakani.
While buses take seven hours to cover the 472km journey, charging between Sh800 (€7) to Sh2 500 (€21) on the executive coaches, Madaraka trains on the SGR take four hours (express) and five hours for the intercounty service.
Passengers in economy class pay Sh700 (€6) each and Sh3 000 (€25) for business class.
The trains will depart from both Nairobi and Mombasa at 08h00, and then again at 15h30.
