The Kenya Ministry of Transport has clamped down on unregistered tourism players wanting to buy group tickets for the standard-gauge railway.
According to Paul Maringa, Kenya’s Minister of Transport, hotels and other entities seeking to bulk-buy tickets must be registered with the Kenya Railways Corporation. This restriction comes after a number of complaints about extra charges imposed by middlemen on buyers for the Nairobi-Mombasa route, known as the Madaraka Express.
Maringa told the Parliamentary Committee on Transport: “We have insisted that any such groups must be properly licensed, especially if they are not tour operators. Further, for hotel operators to be able to do group bookings they must first be registered with the Kenya Railways Corporation.”
Maringa added that block booking of more than 20 passengers must be made 32 days prior to travel. Online bookings were introduced in January.
The daily service departs Nairobi at 08h00 and returns from Mombasa at 15h15.
