2017 is Canada’s year. At least for me and a few million Canadians. Lonely Planet selected Canada as the No. 1 destination this year. So most of my trips this year will take place in Canada. I am also going to Mexico this winter for a few weeks to work and get away from the cold for a little while. But come March, my Canada150 traveling begins with a visit to Niagara Falls followed by Vancouver and Whistler. Later in the year it will be Ottawa and Montreal. Twice. Canada Day on Parliament Hill of Course. It will be an awesome year in and for Canada (I hope).
Nevertheless, my traveling heart keeps going to Stockholm, Sweden. I spent a week there last summer and I didn’t get enough. Stockholm is one of the most beautiful cities I have ever had the pleasure of visiting. And Sweden being the progressive country it is makes me want to visit even more. Oh, and the music of course. Sweden produces more Pop hits per capita than any other country in the world. Chances are that your favorite pop song of the moment was produced or cowritten by a Swede. One of the biggest up and coming global pop stars is from Sweden. If you haven’t heard about her, you will soon. Her name is Zara Larsson. Her name may not be a household name in North America yet, but you’d recognize her songs – she’s the 27th top artist on Spotify. Worldwide. And she’s only 19!
So Stockholm. If I’m lucky and my work/business does well in the next few months, I may just go back to Stockholm in the Fall – even if for just a few days (otherwise in 2018 for sure). There were many neighbourhoods I would have wanted to explore further. Would love to go to a concert at the Ericsson Globe as well. And I want to go back to a club or 2, regardless of my age, haha. I love music and I’m very curious to experience a dance club in Sweden, if only to listen and observe.
The Ericsson Globe is part of a sports and entertainment complex. Very impressive. Photo ©Canadian and World Tourism/Cactus Rock New Media Ltd. |
If you go to Stockholm but don’t have much time (I recommend visiting between June and September), here are 5 must sees:
Stockholm is a city of islands. 14 islands. That’s why some people call it the Venice of the North. To me it’s more like a Paris of the north, it’s so beautiful. Photo ©Canadian and World Tourism/Cactus Rock New Media Ltd. |
3 hotels I suggest for your stay:
The Radisson Blu Waterfront right next to the impressive Convention Centre. Excellent location. The Scandic Continental. Centrally located very close to public transportation (which, by the way, is fantastic).Hotel Rival. A very cool hotel (owned by ABBA’s Benny Andersson) in a cool neighbourhood.Haymarket by Scandic. Another cool hotel in a great location – the Hötorget (Haymarket) city square.
