Smartphones are very much a part of our everyday lives. Nowadays, people struggle to make a trip to the bathroom without taking their phone, cars are fitted with software specifically to pair with your phone, there are public Wi-Fi spots pretty much everywhere and even charging ports in just about every train station.
The Samsung Galaxy S8 was released this month and some are saying it’s as close to a perfect phone as you can get. But just how good is it for travel? Unlike its predecessors, the curves of the S8 are shaped to avoid any accidentally palm touches meaning you won’t be constantly inconvenienced.
It must be said though that reaching for the fingerprint reader without having to significantly adjust your grip is virtually impossible. If you’re on the road and using your phone as a boarding pass or train ticket, be sure to sort this in the queue, particularly if you’re in a hurry.
That said, this very minor niggle can be side-stepped by setting up the iris scanner. Whilst this probably sounds like something from a James Bond film admittedly, the S8 offers the option to unlock the phone with your eyes so long as you look at the right part. It takes literally a second and works even when you’re walking on in a completely darkened room; this makes it perfect if you’re constantly on the move or if your hands are full and it’s a struggle to adjust your grip.
Powered by either Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 or Samsung’s own Exynos 8895, the performance of the S8 is undeniably smooth. You’re able to do multiple things at once and the multi-tasking structure is better than anything on iOS and much improved on previous split screen modes on Android.
For example, you can have WhatsApp, Gmail, YouTube and Facebook all open simultaneously and the speed of the phone won’t be affected. So, when on your travels, you can catch up with your loved ones, reply to those work emails, upload some snaps so your Facebook and Instagram can see what you’re up to and watch your favourite series to pass the time away with any hiccups.
The camera remains one of the best cameras of any phone currently on the market. With a f/1.7 aperture lens, the camera shines in low light and is perfect for capturing those stunning photos so you can remember your travels forever and put a picture to the story when you’re telling everyone about your trip.
