According to the HPI, Indian metros continued to dominate the top 10 favourite destinations list amongst international travellers in the first half of 2016.
New Delhi, the capital city of India, bagged the number one spot as the most preferred Indian destination for overseas travellers, followed by the metropolitan city of Chennai and Mumbai respectively. Other popular destinations for travellers included India’s cultural hub – Kolkata, Bengaluru – the garden city, Hyderabad – the city of pearls and India’s IT hub – Pune occupying the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th positions respectively.
Goa, the famous beach and leisure destination continued to be the 4th most preferred destination among foreign travellers while Agra secured the 10th spot. Kochi moved out of the top 10 preferred destinations, making way for Ahmedabad as the new emerging destination preferred by international tourists occupying the 9th spot.
Further, South East Asian destinations dominated the top 10 favourite destinations list amongst Indian travellers, with Bangkok being the most preferred international destination amongst Indians. Pattaya bagged the fourth spot followed by Phuket while Jakarta occupied the 8th spot.
‘Big Apple’ New York and Sin City Las Vegas bagged the 2nd and 3rd spots respectively. Spain’s Barcelona ranked 6th while Madrid maintained its position at no 9.
While at the 7th rank, Guangzhou, China restored its spot in the top 10, Thailand’s KohSamui moved to the 20th rank making way for Cape Town, South Africa as the most preferred overseas destinations by Indian travellers in 2016.
