Stellenbosch in the Western Cape is the first destination in sub-Saharan Africa to be awarded the Safe Travels Stamp by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC).
The accolade recognises the town’s “quick and rigorous adoption” of recommended hygiene and sanitary measures.
“We’ve been working to align Visit Stellenbosch’s tourism business protocols with global standards, and welcome the opportunity to join this global campaign,” said GM of Visit Stellenbosch, Jeanneret Momberg. She said the Safe Travels Stamp was a great way of proving to future guests the trustworthiness of the destination.
WTTC represents the private travel and tourism sector globally and designed the stamp to enable travellers to make safe travel choices in the wake of COVID-19. Other destinations that comply with required standards include Mauritius, Portugal and Turkey.
Stellenbosch has launched initiatives to raise the standards of health and safety, such as Stellenbosch Ready, which meets three critical guest needs:
- WTTC-validated health and safety protocols
- Adoption of health and safety protocols through staff training
- Flexible booking terms
“The WTTC stamp, together with our Stellenbosch Ready programme, goes one step further in reassuring everyone that Stellenbosch is ready. Our destination is focused on recovery and trust is at the core of our business,” said Momberg.
