Chiawa Camp in the Lower Zambezi in Zambia, has received a fresh new look for the season.
The camp, which is on the banks of the Zambezi River, has extended its lounge and dining areas, as well as decks which offer views of the wild landscape.
Chiawa was completely dismantled and rebuilt this year, and retains a similar exterior while the interiors have fresh furnishings, more private relaxation areas, and a photo wall that tells the story of the camp. The area is known for being a place where David Livingstone ventured 150 years ago, and where the owners – the Cumings family – first launched a photo safari operation.
The ‘renovation’ has also been extended to include a refresher course for guides at Chiawa Camp, as well as its sister, Old Mondoro.
Chiawa offers eight superior tents and one safari suite, with a maximum of 18 guests in one group booking, or 16 separate bookings. There is also a swimming pool, WiFi, spa facilities, exercise facilities, and disabled access.
Experiences include day and night drives, walking, canoeing and boat safaris, lunch on a barge, Tiger fishing, birding and viewing hides, sundowners and bush dinners, a sunset cruise on the river and a sandbank dinner.
The camp can be accessed via the Royal Airfield airstrip until the end of 2018, from Lusaka or Mfuwe; however, from 2019 flights will land at the Jeki airstrip. Guests will then be collected by guides in a 4×4 and enjoy a 15-minute road transfer, followed by a 40-minute scenic boat transfer to the camp. Alternatively, guests can enjoy a 75-minute game drive from Jeki airstrip to the camp.
