Belize is just below the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico and shares the same long Caribbean coral reef. Once you get down to this point though, the water temperature doesn’t change much throughout the year and the “winter” here is quite pleasant: sunny and dry, without as much humidity as you get in the rainy season.
You’ll have a few more options for getting to Belize from the USA this year.
International Flights Into Belize
Flying to Belize gets a little easier this winter season. First up, Sun Country Airlines will be flying direct from frigid Minneapolis to Belize City starting December 22. You’ll have to take a real vacation though: the flights are once a week on Saturday.
Aeromexico also added two new flights from Mexico City. Since Mexico City is one of the cheapest places to fly to from various airports in North America, check your options from where you live. It could be cheaper to use that as a hub to get to Belize than to use a U.S. carrier (and with a more generous luggage allowance).
Westjet is flying from Toronto and Calgary, Air Canada from Toronto.
Southwest has direct nonstop flights to Belize from Houston, Denver and Fort Lauderdale. Sign up for their credit card and you will get 40,000 rewards points after spending $1K. That may be enough points to get you to Belize for free!
And yes you can fly to Belize on Delta, United, and American—the latter serving a London to Belize route via Miami.
You can also do a combo trip from a nearby country: Tropic Air has flights from Cancun and Roatan.
If you want to get down to the best mainland beach area in the country, in Placencia, that’s getting easier as well. Tropic Air announced recently that it will now offer a direct flight between the jungle area of San Ignacio and Placencia, as well as adding more flights from Belize City to there: up to 14 a day on weekends. So between them and Maya Island Air, you shouldn’t have any trouble getting to Placencia no matter when your international flight lands.
