Qatar Airways has been granted a licence to fly into Mombasa, Najib Balala, Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Tourism told delegates at the Magical Kenya Travel Expo in Nairobi on Wednesday.
“We are working on the process,” he said. “By January, hopefully, Qatar Airways will fly into Mombasa.”
He added that flydubai had also been approved to start services to Mombasa and that Nairobi would also be opened to the carrier. Other international airlines servicing Mombasa with direct flights include Turkish Airlines.
Balala emphasised that Kenya would open its skies to international carriers to drive tourism growth. “We are not going to stop airlines to come into Kenya,” he said. “If we want to achieve three million arrivals, we need to open our skies.” The country currently receives roughly one million arrivals a year. “There is no shortcut. Accessibility to the destination is paramount.”
He said creating competition in the aviation sector was also healthy.
