Most of my life I have flown for pleasure or business. The pleasure of going on vacation or to visit family and friends. The need to go places to make a living. About 10 days ago, though I flew for the worst reason one can fly. My Mom passed away unexpectedly. My sister phoned me from Vancouver when it was around 1 am in Toronto. While I stayed with her on the phone, my wife called WestJet to book a flight for both of us as soon as possible.
Thank You WestJet.
It’s been open season on criticizing airlines lately. And deservedly so. United was the most egregious example, but there’s been bad news about Delta, Air Canada, and others. It is important to expose abuses or incompetence on the part of businesses in order to keep them on their toes and remind them that they only exist because of us the customers. Having said that, I also believe in acknowledging a business when a business shows humanity. WestJet, a case in point. From the person who took my wife’s call that horrible night and was very patient, understanding and compassionate, to the WestJetter who checked us in a few hours later, to the flight attendants on flight WS 711 on May 6, 2017: THANK YOU. Thank you as well to WestJet’s CEO and WestJet executives for fostering a culture where WestJetters treat their customers as human beings and not just a source of income. I want to especially single out the flight attendant by the name of Elizabeth who had a small gesture of compassion for me and my wife. I took it as a good sign because Elizabeth was my Mother’s middle name.
Further thanks to the WestJetter who checked us in on our flight back to Toronto.
I look forward to flying with WestJetters again very soon!
