The City of Cape Town has applauded the efforts of everyone who have worked since yesterday (March 15) to contain the fire that broke out on Table Mountain below Tafelberg Road.
A very strong south-easterly wind had previously hampered efforts to contain the fire but since the wind subsided, aerial fire support has been under way.
At the time of going to print, more than 200 professional and seasonal firefighters are on the fire line at various points around Signal Hill, Lion’s Head and Camps Bay – assisted by about 40 Disaster Risk Management Centre volunteers.
“These staff members, together with the Table Mountain National Park staff, Working on Fire and Volunteer Wildfire Services members, have been pushed to their limits overnight and I would like to thank them for their effort thus far,” said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith.
There has been property damage during the fire which will be assessed and reported once the fire is extinguished. Last night, a few homes in Clifton were evacuated as well as 33 people from Table Mountain and 65 from Signal Hill. Seven firefighters were also injured and are receiving treatment.
“Once the fire is extinguished, work will get under way on compiling an incident report that will include damage assessments and try to establish the cause of the fire,” concluded Smith.
