In the hotel industry there’s a lot of turmoil and turnover all the time, but Chabil Mar Villas in Belize is getting ready to mark its 12th year in Placencia, Belize.
We’re getting ready to change one resort’s name for the third time in three years in our review and it’s hard to keep up with who’s who in the chain hotel scene: IHG swallows Kimpton, Raffles merges with Fairmont then gets bought by Accor, Marriott and Starwood become one giant behemoth with 30 brands, and on it goes. So when you book a room at an independent resort like Chabil Mar and it’s the same name and owners from the last stay 10 years ago, that’s comforting.
Not that this Placencia resort has been content to just coast along in the same way year after year, however. We’re proud to have this slice of paradise as a supporting partner of Luxury Latin America. We hear rave reviews from guests and they’re constantly improving their operations.
The Mayan name translates as “Beautiful Sea,” and this is a great beach here, but often it’s the carefully crafted property and its superior hospitality and service that grab all of the attention. Here’s a taste of what they offer:
The Closest Major Resort to Placencia Village
Belize resorts tucked into secluded areas offer quiet and relaxation and at Chabil Mar, you’ll not only be sequestered on a luxury property on the Placencia Peninsula, but will also be close enough to Placencia Village that you don’t need to depend on a resort shuttle to get there. You can stroll along the beach to the Village, ride a bike, or take a golf cart.
There you’ll find plenty of restaurants, pubs, and places to go shopping in a laid-back, pedestrian-friendly town. Despite the growth and newfound wealth in this area, Placencia Village’s vibe is still more like a Belizean fishing village.
A Great First Visit to Belize
While we’ll never turn down a chance to visit the most popular area of Belize—Ambergris Caye—Placencia has a lot of advantages for those who want to explore. The beach here is better than most on that island, but here it’s easy to go east to the reef for diving or west to the jungle for adventure. From Chabil Mar you can book all kinds of excursions in one place that can all be done by boat or car:. These include visits to Mayan ruins, rainforest treks, jungle animal spotting, an endangered butterfly sanctuary, birdwatching, and cave tubing. See their adventures and discovery page for more.
You also won’t be cramped when you return to your room to freshen up for dinner. There are just 22 one- and two-bedroom villas edging the sea, between 950 and 2000 square feet in size. Decorated in furnishings crafted from locally-grown hardwoods and the colorful artwork of local artisans, you’ll slip into a Belize state of mind the instant you arrive.
Get Pampered in Placencia
Wind down and forget work by lounging in a hammock, reading on the pier, strolling the tropical gardens or becoming a beachcomber. Their staff is at your beck and call, but will mind your privacy when you just want to enjoy the quiet at this exclusive boutique resort. Although English is the official language and this was once “British Honduras,” the Belize style of hospitality is most charitably described as “laid back.” Members of Chabil Mar’s guest services team, however, are trained in the style of old world hospitality. Attention to detail is the reason staffers have earned multiple independent awards evaluating guest service superiority for more than ten years.
Whether your idea of nirvana is a private stretch of sand that makes you feel as though you are alone own the beach or you intend to spend your time indulging in every possible Belize and Placencia activity at your disposal, you’ll end your stay understanding why Chabil Mar takes pride in its reputation as the ultimate tropical vacation experience. There’s a good reason this resort gets a lot of return guests, some of them coming back several times since the resort’s opening a dozen years ago.
