Carnival Cruise Line opened a new entertainment training complex in Davie, Fla., near Fort Lauderdale, that it said will vastly upgrade its ability to rehearse shows on its ships.
Brand president Christine Duffy and Carnival vice president for entertainment Sarah Beth Reno cut a ribbon to mark the occasion at an open house for more than 100 people on Thursday.
The 44,500 square-foot space, called Carnival Studios, has five large dance studios. Four are for rehearsals, each tailored to the dimensions of a theater on a different class of Carnival ship. The fifth is for development of new shows and has a 480 square-foot LED screen that Carnival is incorporating into its main theater productions.
The facility also has eight smaller music studios so that bands can rehearse and coordinate more closely with entertainers and technical teams.
“We have 25 ships and we need consistency in our productions,” Reno said. “This helps us keep our promise to our guests.”
Carnival Studios will replace a small show development hall in Hollywood, Fla.; musicians previously rehearsed separately in a space in Boca Raton, Fla.
To dedicate the studios, which cost $5 million, Carnival put on a sizzling 25-minute performance of Amor Cubano, a show that is currently featured on the Carnival Vista and will move to the Carnival Paradise when that ship begins sailing from Tampa on a Cuba itinerary next month.
