Northern Cajamarca region in Peru is all set to host its traditional carnival which is expected to attract over 10,000 domestic and foreign tourists. The carnival will be held from January 18 to March 1.
Sergio Caceres, Head of Cajamarca Regional Chamber of Tourism (Caretur), said that these figures resemble those from 2016. He also said that the influx of tourists on these days depends on the number of beds at hotels.
However, arrivals might reach 15,000 during carnival season as many people rent houses or stay at a friends’ or with relatives due to the lack of rooms.
The tourism industry of Cajamarca is on the rise due to the city’s quietness.
Caceres explained Cajamarca remains one of the favourite tourist destinations during the carnival season. “People come from everywhere, mainly from cities in northern Peru such as Piura, Trujillo, Chiclayo, Chimbote and also Lima,” he said.
Caretur, with support from Foreign Trade and Tourism Ministry (Mincetur) and Promperu, plays a key role in the promotion of Cajamarca as a tourist destination at tourism fairs on a regional and national basis.
