South Island locals and international visitors will this week be able to visit Kaikoura by bus again for the first time since last year’s earthquake.
From Thursday, InterCity’s daily bus services between Christchurch and Kaikoura will resume, travelling via the reopened State Highway 1.
Service 8728 will depart Christchurch at 7am, arriving in Kaikoura at 9.40am. Service 8727 will depart Kaikoura at 3.50pm and arrive in Christchurch at 6.25pm.
Buses will also stop at towns and communities along the route, including Cheviot and Amberley.
“We’re delighted to be able to help reconnect Kaikoura with the rest of the South Island,” says Sam Peate, InterCity Group general manager – coachlines and Auckland tourism.
“Restoring services to Kaikoura was a priority for us to ensure we can serve the local community and share this beautiful part of New Zealand with our international visitors.”
Destination Kaikoura general manager Glenn Ormsby says InterCity’s reinstated services will help show visitors that Kaikoura is back on the map and can be included in South Island itineraries.
“The timetables mean visitors can enjoy Kaikoura’s key attractions, including whale and dolphin encounters, and stay the night before returning to Christchurch,” he said.
InterCity bus services between Kaikoura and Picton remain cancelled due to road conditions.
