Botswana is to host a major conservation summit to redouble efforts to protect the KAZA (Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area) elephants and to devise collaborative solutions for problems the region faces.
The Giants Club Summit will be held in Kasane from March 15-17 next year and is being organised by the Botswana government in collaboration with Tlhokomela Botswana Endangered Wildlife Trust and Space for Giants.
Botswana’s Minister for Environment, Natural Resources, Conservation and Tourism, Tshekedi Khama, said hosting the summit was a step in the right direction.
“With the Giants Club we believe we’re on the right path to go to exactly where we want to be, which is the preservation and continued protection of endangered wildlife. This is urgent work, and it needs this kind of immediate action,” he said.
Heads of state, directors of global conservation organisations, philanthropists and chairs and CEOs of international corporates are expected to attend.
The objectives of the summit will be, among other things, to drive a new partnership between China and Africa that will ensure the flourishing of natural ecosystems, to secure the single remaining contiguous population of KAZA elephants, engage global enterprises to show the value of investing in conservation as well as reviewing the progress made since the 2016 summit.
