Samara Private Game Reserve in the Great Karoo has introduced guided and unguided mountain biking tracks for guests.
Guided routes are in the game-fenced area where riders are accompanied by a Samara ranger. Non-guided routes are also available in the reserve, removed from dangerous wildlife. Riders are given a radio and a map to guide them along the route.
The Samara Mara cycle route, a guided track, covers 33km, with a 656m ascent. The route meanders to the top of the Kondoa Mountain. Riders then head back to the lodge through the Wolwekloof descent.
The Milk River cycle route, which is 12km, is more relaxed. Riders cycle along the Milk River, taking riders through dry riverbeds and open plains. The route in not technical in nature and is open to bikers of all abilities.
The unguided Vulture Mountain cycle route, which is 44km with a 676m total ascent, is a technical ride for experienced riders. Riders will see views of the plains of the Cameboo from atop Vulture Mountain before heading back to the lodge.
The Wild Olive Grove cycle route, which is unguided, is a 20km track, leads to a 1,000 year old wild olive tree grove. This is a gentle route, and is open to bikers of all abilities.
Packed picnics can be arranged, or riders can join the rest of their party for a mountain-top picnic lunch. Afterwards bikers can cycle back or take a game drive.
Guests are required to bring their own cycling equipment and need to book rides in advance.
