Everyone looks for recreational activities as soon as the holidays begin. A UK based holiday company just revealed favourite activity of Britishers on holidays. Blue Chip Holidays – a business that offers 4 and 5 star cottages, apartments and lodges in the UK – conducted a survey that disclosed the number one holiday activity of people here is visiting landmarks. Among zoo, museums, galleries, historic houses and landmarks, Big Ben was voted as Britain’s best landmark.
In a bid to find how British people spend their holidays, the holiday company uncovered that people are more interested in visiting landmarks for enjoyment. They were curious to find out more about this matter, which led them to discover that Houses of Parliament’s iconic clock tower, Big Ben tops the list of best landmarks in Britain. Visiting local landmarks is more popular than going for art gallery trips, day out to a zoo, local wildlife park, historic houses and garden tours.
Finding the favourite activity of holidaymakers wasn’t enough for Blue Chip Holidays, so they continued their research to find the landmark Britishers specifically love to visit. They asked to 1,000 Britishers, “What is your favourite landmark?”. Most of them liked Tyne Bridge, the London Eye and York Minister with Big Ben getting thrice the number of votes than Stonehenge – the second favourite of people in the UK.
Statistics revealed the 10 best landmarks.
- Big Ben – 24%
- Stonehenge – 8%
- London Eye – 5%
- Angel of the North – 4%
- Edinburgh Castle – 4%
- Tower Bridge – 3%
- The Tower of London – 2%
- Buckingham Palace – 1.9%
- Blackpool Tower – 1.7%
- Houses of Parliament – 1.6%
The results are truly astonishing, especially compared to the survey that Blue Chip Holidays commissioned last year. The participants of last year’s survey were American tourists who were asked the same question. According to Americans, Buckingham Palace was a place to go when visiting the United Kingdom. It topped the best landmarks list for them, whereas Big Ben didn’t even make it to their top ten.
Tori Kirwan-Taylor, Brand and Communications Manager for Blue Chip Holidays commented on the results saying that it felt good to see landmarks become a popular trend. People are giving so much importance to these sites and are taking time out to explore them.
She was also fascinated by the difference of opinion between American and British tourists. No doubt, the difference was surprising, but even more startling was the fact that both Big Ben and Buckingham Palace are situated in London. This unveils another fact that London has become the centre of tourist attraction where travellers from all around the world stop to appreciate its rich history and enchanting beauty.
