Living in the UK can get hectic every once in a while, even most of the time. Being stuck between work, commuting, home chores and noisy neighbors can really stress you out, which is probably why so many of us get really excited whenever someone mentions the word “peace”.
Of course, most of us can’t afford to permanently move to a forest or mountain, but what we can do is have a weekend getaway to a place where peace and quiet are the norm, and not just a dream. And where can you find such places? Well, take a look at these top spots from around the UK.
Calf of Man
Most people are familiar with the natural landscapes and rustic charm of the Isle of Man, but not many know the small island at its southwest coast that has a population of only 2 (seasonal) inhabitants.
Calf of Man is the perfect quiet getaway as it is a Nature Reserve and a Bird observatory with very limited accommodation capacities. This means that you’ll have to pre-book in advance, but also that there will be plenty of peace and quiet for you to rest.
Currently, there are only the wardens of the island living on Calf of Man and the maximum capacity of visitors is 8. Due to its preservation efforts, getting there is only possible with the local boatmen and staying means bringing your own food and sleeping bags. But if you’re looking for glorious nature, fresh sea air and tranquility, this is the place for you.
Ardnamruchan
Scotland is the home to many unexplored locations that are perfect for a getaway from the noisy confines of urban life. One such location is the Ardnamurchan – a peninsula that stretches over 130 km2 in the West Scottish Highlands.
The Ardnamurchan is famous for being a place unspoiled by humans and rarely disturbed by tourists. There is only one single-track road leading to the island, but taking the journey is very worth for those who want to explore uncrowned forests, beaches, and lochs, as well as see local wildlife like dolphins, eagles, and even whales.
Lundy Island
Lundy Island is a Marine Conservation Zone located about 12 miles from the north coast of Devon. But despite its vicinity to Devon, the island is not a noisy and crowded place, but quite the opposite.
The first thing that you notice about Lundy Island is that there’s only one shop, one pub and no cars in the streets. As soon as you put down your bags, the transition to simple and quiet country life feels almost immediate. There are a number of accommodation options at Lundy Island (even a castle) and if you ever get bored you can go seal spotting or try to catch a glimpse of the local nesting puffins.
Iona
Iona is a very small island located on the southwest coast of the Island of Mull in Scotland. The island is only 3 miles long and has a population of about 120 people, but its admirers are far many.
The Iona Island is primarily known for its rich history and charming peacefulness. Most visitors come to the island because it is known as the “The Cradle of Christianity”, due to it being the home to an ancient ritual and praying site. However, this doesn’t mean that those less interested in religion won’t find anything to enjoy.
In short, Iona is a great choice for those who are looking for:
- A quiet small-town atmosphere.
- Fresh sea air and greenery.
- Historic and cultural sites.
- Secluded beaches.
- Craft shops, boat trips and fishing.
Yorkshire Dales
The Yorkshire Dales have been one of UK’s most popular countryside locations ever since the Victorian era. The Dales are a part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and many people come to enjoy them for their breathtaking natural scenery.
There aren’t many historic sites or similar attractions at the Dales, but what they do offer are vast stretches of valleys, rivers, and meadows that are perfect for walking tours or cycling and even stargazing at night
And if that’s not to your fancy, you can also find craft courses, local beers and cheese, as well as festivals and adventure trips. In short, the Dales are a great place if you want to get some peace and nature, but still feel a bit spoiled.
